TUMMY TIME FAQ
HOW DO I GET STARTED WITH TUMMY TIME?
It’s easy. Drape your baby on you making sure they are awake the whole time. Lay out a small quilt and a rolled up towel or a boppy pillow is helpful. Baby might enjoy some black and white patterns to look at and a mirror while on their bellies. Don’t forget to gate any pets.
If you find your baby doesn’t like tummy time (not every baby takes to it immediately), watch our tummy time video to learn more.
HOW LONG AND HOW OFTEN?
Start out with a little tummy time multiple times every day. Every diaper change is a good way to remember. Also, once a day (probably the morning when baby is happiest), make it an “event” and help your baby be happy and enjoy her tummy for an extended period. Then after every diaper change or whatever works for your schedule, roll them over and do a shorter period.
WHAT IF MY BABY HATES TUMMY TIME?
We recommend doing it every day. Many babies take to it easily while others need a constant introduction to it. Learn about all the positions and ways of introducing it to your baby. I can’t emphasize this enough. There really are many ways of doing it and introducing it to your baby. It’s worth learning about it. If your baby really really hates it every time you try, you probably need to talk to your doctor to rule out any other issues.
WHAT ARE THE RESULTS?
Your baby will develop true strength. Parents will see a faster progression of rolling, crawling, and learning to push herself up to sitting will happen. Tummy time also helps lay the foundation for attention, motor planning, spatial orientation, bilateral integration, and more.
